Preface
“It’s the Breath of Life” is a phrase I coined that I hope will become synonymous with the understanding that Humanity has the potential to begin at viability and, more precisely, become an individual living Human Being at their first breath.
Any restriction on abortion before the viability of the fetus is an infringement on a Woman’s Freedom of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Prior to viability the fetus is not an individual person, it is not a being at all. What is it then ? It certainly is flesh and blood, but that is all it is. It is still the flesh and blood of the mother, her organ or body part of creation; like her arm or kidney or muscle, except this flesh ( a fetus ) is budding off, evolving ( becoming new ) with the help of a man’s sperm and being formed into a fully functioning human body that becomes, after viability, able to become a separate person and a new human being at their first breath.
A human being, with limited or finite knowledge and existence can only truly know, relate or interface with another human being; only if that other person is a conscious breathing living human being, able of forming a mutual relationship. A person that is able to understand and also express body language and vocal sounds so that relationship can form. Humans do not live alone.
And the strange thing with the above understanding of when a new human life begins is that with a wise reading of the Bible, Science and Social/Political Thought most rational freedom loving American citizens have come to the same conclusion.
The logical and rational way human beings view the world is by our wonderful gift of scientific reasoning. However, sometimes scientific facts are unable to grasp the complexity of Human Beings, and even the deepest meaning of reality itself. Think of the wave/particle duality. How can a photon of light be both a wave and particle at the same time ? It is illogical but it is true, this is a ‘profound truth’ as compared to a ‘trivial truth’ [Believing is Seeing, by Michael Guillen, kindle page 25]. The Bible has similar profound truths, also, one being that Christ was both a human being and God.
When does a human being become part of humanity, becomes an individual person, is similar to a profound truth, in that there are two correct answers to this question. However, in this case one answer is a profound truth and the other is merely a trivial truth.
At one end of the spectrum we have conception, when a woman’s egg is joined to a man’s sperm and a living cell is formed. At the other end we have viability, or as I refer to it as “it’s the breath of life”; when a viable fetus is born or could survive outside the womb if prematurely removed prior to birth.
Some people have proposed that humanity begins somewhere in-between, like fetal heart beat, pain reaction, or other fetal development stage prior to viability, but any of these flesh-like distinctions can be grouped with conception; because the defining criteria is a new genetic code in cells developing in a woman’s body before viability.
Thus, lets look at the religious, scientific, and political arguments for the idea that human life begins at conception verse viability to illustrate which truth about the beginning of human life is the profound truth and therefore the wise solution to the abortion debate.
Paradoxically, if we ask another simple question ( What defines being a human being ? ); this duality, conception vs viability or birth, gets turned on its head. This time the trivial answer is that looking at births or grown people we can define a human being. When in reality its at conception, our DNA, that defines a Human Being; just as every other organism on earth is defined by it’s DNA. There are different self-evident truths depending upon the question being asked.
