Biblical Prospective
Why bring the Bible into a rational moral debate about when human life begins and is therefore entitled to all the rights and freedoms of an American Citizen; should we not allow Human reasoning to debate the issue and leave religious beliefs to personal private matters. The answer to this question is a resounding No, and, our Country will pay a price if it does not consider Biblical wisdom when determining Human rights and other Constitutional Freedoms.
Our Country was founded on Religious principles, more specifically, Biblical moral principles. The Declaration of Independence speaks of “self-evident truths”. One being that “all men are Created equal” and the other that men are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights”, one being the right to Life. So the Founding Father’s of our Nation believed in a Creator and that Created Man had Rights. The Bible provides insights into the mysteries of humanity, including when human life begins.
That said, it should be realized that Biblical principles, Christian principles, Jewish principles, Islamic principles, Buddhist principles or for that matter any other religious principles should not be blindly made law. America was founded on Individual Freedoms and Rights and its laws are to be founded on Human Reason and Wisdom, to protect those Freedoms and Rights, not on religious dogma because there is no State Religion in America.
The first insight is that the life of any creature mentioned in scripture is in its blood. “, because the blood is the life,”. With the shedding of blood a creature will lose its life force and die. Some people assume that these scriptures point to the conclusion that when blood is first detected flowing in a fetus that an individual human being is created. But this is a misconception. All the passages in the Bible concerning this insight deal with death, when life ceases to exist. Nowhere does it express the idea an individual creature begins to exist when blood starts to flow.
The second insight, and I believe the defining insight, on when human life begins is Genesis 2:7 where it states, “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living soul.” Here in plain simple language human life does not begin until the breathing of air or breath of life or obtaining a human spirit in the image of God, however which way you want to phrase it.
Then there are the many Biblical passages cited by Anti-abortionists who want a more restrictive abortion standard than viability. These are the multiple times the Bible talks about (1) interacting with or knowing a fetus, whether viable or not, prior to birth [ Only God can do this],
(2) the sanctity of life and God’s dominion over all life [ the Lord Jesus Christ in John 14:6 stated “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” Also see Colossians 1:15-17, God (Jesus) gave Adam his life and every person created thereafter; and Jesus (God) is the giver of eternal life. No where does it say human life begins before viability.],
(3) the condemnation of child sacrifice and how children are a blessing [ In my humble opinion, I think Satan instigated child sacrifice to try to eliminate the possible future Messiah and after Jesus Christ came into the world Satan’s wrath has rekindled to harm Mothers ( being that one Holy Mother brought forth the Messiah) by convincing man that an unviable fetus is more than meer flesh of the Mother. ]and,
(4) providing justice and mercy to those in need because of our love for our neighbor. [ where is the justice and mercy for the pregnant Mother who is unable to to obtain proper medical care for her pregnancy.]
See below examples of these Bible passages that were provided to me courtesy of Priests for Life, I believe a now defunct Catholic Anti-abortion group, when I inquired about such passages. None of these passages directly, most attempt indirectly to, apply to the question of when a human being’s life begins for humanity.
